Short version: we don't use cookies, and we don't track you. Here is everything Map My Memories puts on your device, and everything it doesn't.
We set no cookies
Map My Memories sets no cookies at all — not for advertising, not for analytics, not even to keep you signed in. Nothing here follows you to other websites, and we run no advertising or marketing trackers of any kind. That is why there is no cookie banner: nothing is put on your device until it is needed to do something you asked for.
The one thing that isn't ours — the identifier Mapbox uses to count the maps they draw — has its own question, on the page where it would happen. Read the front page or a shared link without pressing Show the globe and your browser never contacts Mapbox and never downloads their code.
What is stored on your device
Up to four things, all kept in your browser's local storage rather than in a cookie, and none of them there until they are needed.
- Your sign-in. When you sign in, your browser keeps the token that proves it's you, so you aren't asked for your password on every page. Signing out removes it. Without this there is no way to stay signed in.
- Whether you've seen the tour. A single yes, so the walk-through of the globe doesn't replay every time you open the app. You can replay it from the help button whenever you like.
- Your answer about the globe (
mmm.map-consent). The word “granted”, so you are asked once rather than on every visit. It holds nothing else. - Mapbox's map-load count (
mapbox.eventDataand two keys beside it), only once you ask for the globe. When a map is drawn, Mapbox's code puts a random identifier in your browser and uses it to count map loads, which is how they bill us and measure their own service. It is a persistent identifier and their code offers no way to switch it off while still showing a map — so instead, on the pages you can reach without an account, no map is drawn until you press Show the globe. Until you do, Mapbox is never contacted and their code is never even downloaded. We don't read this identifier, it isn't joined to your account or your photos, and it is not used for advertising.
Signing in counts as asking: an account is made by agreeing to the privacy notice, which names Mapbox, so the globe opens straight away once you have one. The wall-display page (/kiosk) is never gated either — it is a screen on a wall with nobody standing at it to press anything.
How we count visits
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views and a few product events, like “an import finished”. It stores nothing on your device, sets no cookies, and doesn't give us a way to tell one visitor from another or to tie a number to your account, your email or your photos. What we see is totals: how many people opened the app, how many got through sign-up, how many shared a globe.
We also log errors your browser runs into, so broken things can be found and fixed. A report has the error, the page it happened on, and your browser's version string. It goes to our server log and nowhere else.
Other companies your browser talks to
Using the site means your browser fetches things from a few other companies. None of them are advertising networks, and none of them are given your photos or your email except where noted.
- Mapbox draws the globe. To send the right piece of map it receives your IP address and the area you are looking at, and it counts map loads using the identifier described above. None of that happens until you ask for the globe or sign in.
- Supabase holds your account, your trips and your photos, and your browser loads photos directly from it.
- Vercel serves the site itself.
- Google, only if you press Import from Google Photos. Google's sign-in code is not loaded until you press that button, and Google may set its own cookies on its own domains once you do. If you never press it, your browser never contacts Google.
- Anthropic, only if you press Name from photo on a trip, and only the one photo you pressed it for.
Clearing it
Signing out removes your sign-in token. To clear everything, use your browser's “clear site data” or “cookies and site data” setting for this site. Nothing here survives that, and nothing is restored from our side afterwards.
If this changes
If we ever add something that isn't needed to run the site — a marketing tag, an advertising pixel, anything that follows you elsewhere — we will ask you first and it will not load unless you say yes. Questions go to hello@mapmymemories.com.
